100% gluten free pizza in Naples!

In Naples, the city where I was born, there are families who are pizzaiolo for generations: the Mattozzi, the Salvo, the Sorbillo, the Vesi to name a few that are the most renown in the city.

Today I am back in Naples with my mother to visit the first retrospective exhibition of one the greatest living photographers, Mimmo Jodice, at the Madre museum.

After we made a stop at Il Pio Monte di Misericordia to see the outstanding painting by Caravaggio, “Le opere di Misericordia”

And then we headed to the well-known street Via dei Tribunali where many pizzeria are located.

This time I chose to go to Vesi as almost one year ago they created a separate kitchen and oven where they make only gluten free pizza. So no fear of cross contamination with gluten. Evviva!

I have to tell you that I am a very curious person so I went straight to get to know the pizzaiolo, Enzo.

We talked about pizza and gluten free while he showed me his skills in hand-streching a real Neapolitan pizza.

Back to my table, number 33, I got the menu and spotted “my” pizza: I chose the “verace” with bufala mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and basil.

The pizza was good: the dough was tasty, the ingredients fresh, my only comment was about the colour, like not baked enough; I would have preferred the pizza crust a bit crunchier.

After my meal, I got the chance to meet Ferdinando Vesi, owner and master pizzaiolo. I told him my feeling on the pizza and he was nice and open to listen to me. I think dialogue is important and it always makes us learn something about ourselves and the others.

I have tasted many gluten free pizza and, because I love pizza so much I am not that easy to be pleased. I think this pizza needs some improvements here and there and I am confident that next time I will be back to Vesi, it will be just perfect.
