Shakespeare and Company café

Shakespeare and Company in Paris is one-of-a-kind bookshop: if you don’t know it already, you should definitely go and discover by yourselves what I am talking about. It’s just opposite the beautiful Notre Dame Church and very easy to spot.

I just quote these lines from the bookshop web site to give you a hint:

« George Whitman, an American, founded Shakespeare and Company at 37 rue de la Bûcherie, Paris, in 1951. Nicknamed the “Don Quixote of the Latin Quarter,” he was known for his free spirit, his eccentricity, and his generosity—all qualities captured in the verse he inked above the doorway to the bookshop’s library: “Be not inhospitable to strangers lest they be angels in disguise.” »

It seems that creating a café adjacent to the book shop has always been Whitman’s dream. It might have taken some years but thanks to his daughter’s final determination, today it’s become a reality and such a nice place to stay !

Shakespeare and Company café is small, warm and cosy, you can sit and easily befriend with your neighbour – I did that 😉 – just sipping the same cappuccino in front of you or drinking one healthy super juice.

That’s also thanks to Bob’s Kitchen fantastic team who is in charge of the café and prepares fresh meals and desserts everyday. By the way Bob’s kitchen in Paris makes some of the best freshly pressed juices and smoothies that I have ever tasted. You don’t want to miss that either.

At Shakespeare and Company they are gluten free friendly so me too, I can go, sit and enjoy a nice lunch.

Yesterday I opted for a futomaki with whole rice and avocado, a super healthy beetroot, lemon, apples and ginger juice, and a yummy red berries crumble, I know… I do love crumbles!

Available and gluten free there are also salads and flapjacks. Can’t wait to try these next time I go.

Shakespeare and Company hosts several interesting events, you can check on their web site and maybe go to the next one:

I look forward to the Yves Bonnefoy’s lecture!
