Ecru is a raw, vegan, gluten free restaurant located in the heart of beautiful Rome, a few blocks away from the Vatican city and Saint Peter Cathedral.

Ecru is also a beautiful story of friendship that bloomed thanks to the love of a mindful, healthy way of eating and ideas exchanged around the table.

Katia and Veronica are long time friends and one day the gift of a cookbook specialised in raw foods made them passionate about this new way of eating.

Little by little the idea of opening up their own restaurant made its way into their minds and soon after a cooking class with raw master chef Vito Cortese, founder of the renown Grezzo raw chocolate pastry shop in Rome (to read my post on this great place, it’s right here) made them gain skills and confidence to launch their own project.

Ecru adventure began in September 2015.

Veronica and Katia work hard everyday to serve their clients with the best possible food: they source their ingredients in Italy, they don’t use processed foods, no refined sugars, only natural ingredients that are cooked raw, meaning that nothing is cooked over 40° C temperature.

In this way foods preserve most of their precious properties and taste.

Besides everything is also vegan and gluten free. The restaurant has recently got the Italian Celiac Association logo, so there is not risk of cross contamination with gluten here.

Veronica and Katia work full time at the restaurant but they always find time to welcome their clients and exchange with them: this is a precious value for them and I did appreciate it a lot !

From antipasti to several spreads and humus that are served with vegetables, grainy homemade crackers, from carrots or zucchini spaghetti to pesto sauces, to vegan burger and sandwiches, I think that here each one of us can find something to like and to fully enjoy eating.

I went to Ecru twice this week.

Once for lunch with my beloved mum. We shared antipasti with homemade veggie crackers, different sauces and humus. Delicious!

Then my mum got falafels with humus and quinoa salad and me I chose carrots spaghetti with a very good pesto sauce made of walnuts and rocket.

Another time I went back to Ecru in the afternoon and tried their homemade almond milk with nutmeg and vanilla. So good! I also enjoyed the raw chocolate quinoa energy bar. A real boost!

I didn’t taste the desserts though.

I was happily satisfied with my meal but they were tempting: raw, vegan, gluten free tiramisù, orange cake, chocolate bon, brownie…oh my…I think I have to go back to Ecru a third time!
