Azzurra, the sparkling owner of the gluten free shop “Mea Libera Tutti!”, made me discover these delicious gluten free biscuits that are typical of Venice and are called “Buranellini”.

The Buranellini biscuits are named after the isle of Burano where the 90 years old Palmisano, a renown bakery and pastry shop, used to make them. In the past it was tradition for women to prepare big ring shaped cakes called “Bussolà” for Easter and have them baked at local bakeries. Palmisano was one of them.

Time passed and at Palmisano those Easter cakes became small ring shaped biscuits stuffed with delicious cream and different kind of jams. The “Buranellini” were thought for children at the beginning but in the end, as adults, we can’t help enjoying them too.

I tried them with chocolate cream, so good!

The others were furred cherry jam. Plus the package is small and practical: it can be put in a bag and be easily carried around. And I might add, it does come in hand when we are in need of a sweet break.
